This week marks Diwali, the festival of lights celebrated by many in our community. Wishing light and joy to all who celebrate!
September was, as always, full of fun and challenges in the music room. Students have chosen their instruments and have begun bringing them home to practice. Remember that students should aim to practice for at least 20 minutes, 3 times per week. Practicing outside class time is an expectation of the course, as our time in class is limited.
Meet the Teacher night is coming up this week as well. Mr. R will be in the music room from 6PM to 8PM. Drop by to say hello, or just to grab a fresh-baked cookie! (Gluten-free also available)
Our first playing test is coming up on the 14th. The test piece is the “Can-can” from Offenbach’s “Orpheus” opera, and can be found on page 33 of the red repertoire book. Remember that we’re practicing rhythm, proper breath technique, and tone.
Our Unit 1 Theory test is coming up on the 21st! This unit covered Major and natural minor scales, as well as rhythm including eighth, quarter, half, and whole notes, as well as quarter and half rests. Students with excused absences on the day of the test will write it when they return.
Finally, just a reminder that our Winter concert will take place on December 15th. Tickets are Pay-What-You-Want, and baked goods will also be sold at the concert. All funds go toward the music class trip at the end of the year.
Here are a few simple ways to support your student:
Ask what they discussed or explored in class
Encourage them to show you their instrument
Help them set a realistic weekly routine for practicing
If your student encounters challenges, please know we’re here to work together.
